| Japanese Association of University Women(JAUW) was founded in 1946,and in 1954 joined International Federation of University WomeniIFUWj which had been established in 1919. Today some170,000 are members of IFUW from 71 nations in the world. |

According to its Constitution, the purposes of JAUW are:
1. To promote higher education for women
2. To improve the status of women and girls
3. To promote understanding and friendship among the university women of the world, irrespective of
their race, nationality, religion or political opinions
4. To promote peace
To achieve the above objectives, JAUW participates in the following activities:
1.E Awarding fellowships to graduates, undergraduates, as well as students with handicaps. Besides,
adding to two special fellowships (Holmesf Fellowship and Yasui Fellowship for Medical Students)
Morita Fellowship Award was newly established in 1998, to encourage scientific researches by
young women scientists.
EInviting members of IFUW to Japan using JAUWfs international fellowship fund.
EServing as an intermediary for fellowships of IFUW and its member countries.
2.E Holding an annual nationwide seminar to discuss current problems and prepare reports thereby as
well as to submit requests to Ministriesconcerned.
ECollaborating with other womenfs
organizations in the country
3.EParticipating in the Conferences of IFUW and its regional federation of University Women of AsiaD
EPairing activities coordinated by CIR and IFUW
EParticipating in cooperative projects with national affiliates of IFUW.
The theme of Study and Action Programme (SAAP) of IFUW and its affiliate member organizations for
IFUW's Programme for Action for 2001-2004 is Women: Agents for Change .

JAUW
is a National Affiliate of International Federation of University Women (IFUW).
IFUW, as an international non-governmental organization, has consultative status
to the Economic and Social Council of United Nations (ECOSOC) since 1947 and
sends representatives to the UN and its specialized agencies. Through
consultative status, IFUW members have a direct voice on issues of critical
importance. The headquarters of IFUW is as follows:

International Conferences of JAUW
EIFUW
Conference
The 18th Triennial Conference of IFUW was held in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1974 and enjoyed the participation of almost 1000 attendants. It was the first Conference held in Asia and was considered most successful.
In 1995, the 25th Triennial Conference was held in Yokohama from 18 to 25, August, featuring a very impressive speech in English by the Empress Michiko. It was also praised highly for its excellent management and friendly warm atmosphere.
The 26th Triennial Conference was held in 1998 from 20 to 25 August at Graz, Austria where Prof. Reiko Aoki, former President of JAUW was elected First Vice-President of IFUW and Ms Kay Fusano was re-elected Membership Committee Member. A research report titled g Peace Education in Japanh was presented by the members of Education Committee and Hiroshima Branch.
The
27th Triennial Conference was held in August 2001 in Ottawa,
Canada.

Conference
University Women of Asia(UWA) is a regional federation of Asian member Associations of IFUW and at the Graz IFUW Conference, UWA headquarters was transferred from India to Japan for the years from 1998 to 2001. The 5th Triennial Conference of UWA was successfully held at National Womenfs Education Centre in Saitama Prefecture from 15 to 17 October, 1999, linked with the annual seminar of JAUW on the theme of g Empowerment of Women—for Establishing a gender equal society.h
